One Year Clinical Fellowship Training for Licensed Physicians to provide dermatological care to underserved and rural area

Clinical Dermatology Fellowship

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Clinical Dermatology Fellowship was established in South Texas at the Dermatology Clinic of McAllen in 2010.  The program was established to address the dermatology shortage in the South Texas Border area.  The main mission of the Clinical Dermatology Fellowship Program is to provide higher education by combining teaching, integral clinical services, high quality patient care and clinical research.  This program has been organized to offer the Clinical Fellows with progressive knowledge, clinical skills and improving responsibility in patient care.  The Clinical Fellow will obtain the proper skills in diagnosis and treatment of the most common, as well as unusual/complex conditions of the skin.  This extensive educational experience shall guarantee that each Clinical Fellow will be competent and well prepared to enter the practice of Dermatology.

The Clinical Fellowship experience will include recognition and treatment of dermatologic conditions during the chronological progression of the integumentary system from the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric cycles of life, in order to provide total health care as it relates to dermatology.  All relevant and pertinent topics in Dermatology will be covered during the training period.

The program consists of one full year of training and mentoring.  The Clinical Fellow will attend all the basic science and didactic lectures with the dermatology residents.  In addition, the Fellow will also follow the attending physician for hospital consults and assist in Mohs Micrographic Surgery.  There will be a Kodachrome session at the end of each day to review dermatologic cases.  In addition, there will be dermatopathology training with board certified dermatopathologists.

All the previous clinical dermatology fellows have continued their training in a dermatology residency.  The first clinical fellow is now a board certified dermatologist practicing in Dallas Texas.
